Domenic Tamborriello, LMSW
has over 26 years experience in working as a therapist. He works with individuals, couples, families, and groups.
He has an extensive history in the civil rights, the women's rights, and the men's movements that allow him to bring a special sensitivity to his work. Having a Catholic father and a Jewish mother while growing up in a predominantly African-American neighborhood in Pittsburgh, PA before moving to a small town in West Virginia, allows him to relate well to people of all economic classes and spiritual persuasions. He facilitates men's groups, women's groups and poetry groups. He has over 15,000 hours of groupwork experience.
One of the most unique aspects of his skills as a counselor is his ability to use poetry as a therapeutic tool. Based on the work of John Fox, he uses poetry extensively and believes it is the simplest and most efficient tool he has ever come across to help people make progress and deep change. He has conducted over 50 poetry groups that have lasted a minimum of ten weeks each.
He also specializes in couples counseling for both straight and gay couples. In his couples work, his sensitivity to gender issues makes him an effective translator in helping men and women understand one another more and better.
He sees authenticity as the most important tool in helping people sustain and improve their relationships. While that sounds simple, embracing one's most authentic self and communicating that effectively is not easy for most of us. Hence the need for an attentive and dedicated guide along the way.
Domenic is committed to seeing the very best in everyone and helping them own the fullest range of who they are. As noted by Paul Tillich, Domenic believes that "The first duty of love is to listen." He is dedicated to hearing each of his clients as well and as fully as he possibly can and offering them the kind of therapeutic experience that leaves them feeling respected and empowered.
He accepts some insurance payments and predominantly works on a sliding scale payment schedule based on ability to pay. His usual fees run from $50 to $110 per hour for individual and couples counseling and $10 to $45 per group counseling.
In addition to his private practice, he has been an adjunct professor at the University of Michigan School of Social Work and also works at the Relationship Center of Michigan in Brighton.
